Mexico is world reknown for its skillful artisans in a wide variety of fields. Mexican writer Alberto Ruy Sanchez Lacy called Mexican tile a "chosen skin". Tiles have embellished numerous public and private spaces thoughout Mexico. A glimpse anywhere in Mexico, particularly in the central states, shows the widespread use of talavera tiles decorating a broad range of spaces from kitchens, fountains, facades, interiors of luxurious hacienda homes to churches. It is through traditional artifacts, such as handcrafted tiles, that one can perceive an artisan’s sensibility, and creativity. Handcrafted ceramic tile is a rooted cultural heritage in Mexico, since its practice of making it began in the late sixteenth century, around 1570 and 1573. Mexican ceramic tiles have actively played a distinguished role as an important utilitarian and decorative element in Mexican architecture.
Mexican tile is functional, beautiful, and practical, it provides a long lasting wall or surface that is easy to care and maintain. You can install Mexican tiles in virtually any area you want to enjoy their warm and beauty.
The tiles are made from clay dug out of the ground and fired to a temperature at which the clay undergoes chemical changes and becomes permanently hard. Then the tile is glazed and decorated by hand, and fired once again to give it its final and lively finish. Its physical characteristics make Mexican tiles particularly attractive and distinctive. Mexican tiles are concave (not perfectly flat). They are characterized as unique, irregular, functional, and expressive.

I am so in love with the tiles I got.... both my husband and mom passed within 5 months of each other and these projects kept me busy and from falling apart. I did tile work on our small house in Mexico so really wanted to bring some of it here and it's beautiful...Will be ordering again....I tell everyone where I got them..I live in a gated community on a main street so everyone sees them everyday..
I absolutely LOVE the broken tiles and look forward to creating my beautiful table. I've already ordered more tiles, which should arrive today. Your customer service and shipping services are excellent. Well done!!!
I love your broken tiles the colors were awsome and the broken pieces were big enough to cut for sizing. I will definlty be buying more.
Ah, such lovely tile! Exactly what I wanted, with the added benefit of larger pieces so I can cut them to fit my project. A really good assortment of designs, in perfect colors. Plus, the order arrived 3 days after I placed it - over a weekend., I have bought from Tierra y Fuego previously, and will definitely purchase from them over and over.
I love the broken Mexican tiles and wish that we could order more. The business that we have is decorating 10" cement balls for yard art. The price we pay for the shipping of these pieces brings up our overhead so much that it is not feasible for us to make a profit. The ball that it did make was beautiful and am sure that it will be the lst to sell. Thank you
As a mosaic artist, it is difficult to find unusual tiles locally. I am so pleased with my purchase that I plan to visit the San Diego store when I am in California. The tiles arrived promptly in good condition and were exactly as seen on the website.
The tiles arrived super fast and were exactly what I wanted--nice variety of patterns, nice sizes to use as is or cut for my mosaic projects. Highly recommend.
Thanks for a great product that shipped quickly. These are really unique; a good variation of different patterns and designs. I received a lot of colorful options (I was worried about having too much "white" in the tile). I'd say the broken pieces are from about 6-7 different tile designs. Most of the tiles are pretty large, even though they are broken pieces. A lot of mine are 2 or 3"... some more and some less. I plan to nip them with the tile cutter for more intricate mosaics. I tried it out already and even though the tile is thick my standard tools work just fine.
I ordered broken tile from three companies, and these arrived first and were just what I needed. Thicker than most and it looks like whoever picked the pieces actually cared about what I received. Will reorder.
Wow, it came very quickly. It's beautiful! I'm going to mosaic a warped cello of mine. This tile will be stunning on it. I'm having so much fun sorting out the numerous colors and patterns. I will buy from you again.
